Josh Gibson didn’t play a single Major League Baseball season, but he is a true legend of the game. A figure almost considered mythical in baseball, Gibson was considered the “Black Babe Ruth” of the Negro Leagues. Baseball historians considered Gibson to be one of the greatest catchers and power hitters to play baseball in any league. He is said to have hit “almost 800” home runs in his 17-year career against Negro League and independent teams, according to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Many baseball fans who watched both Gibson and Ruth play called Ruth the “White Josh Gibson.” He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.
Did You Know: : In 2000, Gibson ranked 18th on The Sporting News’ list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players, the highest-ranking of five players to have played all or most of their careers in the Negro Leagues.
