Leroy “Satchell” Paige was not only a pioneer, but a true iron man of the game. Before becoming the oldest player to debut in a Major League baseball game (at 41), he had done most of his damage in the Negro Leagues. He won a Negro Leagues championship in 1942 and a World Series championship in 1948. He played his last Major League game in 1965 with the Kansas City A’s – when he was 58 years old. He was the first Negro Leagues player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971.

      CC on Satchell:
Satchell Paige ( pitcher ) “It’s funny to hear stories about him. For him to make it to the bigs and get Rookie of the Year at age 41 is one of the best baseball stories of all time.”

      Did You Know:

Paige was also the oldest player to ever play in an All-Star Game. He was 47 years old when he represented the American League All-Stars in 1953.

CC Celebrates Black History Month – The Pioneers of the Game of Baseball

Everyday for the month of February, CC will feature one of his baseball heroes as part of Black History month. Each one of the men had a profound effect on the game of baseball and was an inspiration to CC as he worked to become a Major League Baseball player.

"I grew up in the Boys & Girls Club, grew up in the inner city, saw everything that it can do for you," Sabathia said. "I was fortunate to be able to get out, and now I'm trying to give back."
