Tony Gwynn was statistically the most consistent hitter in baseball history. Though he only had 135 home runs in his 19-year career (all with the San Diego Padres), he has hit no less than .309 in any full season of his career. He has 3,141 career hits and retired in 2001 with a career batting average of .338, the highest by any player who started his career after World War II.

      CC on Tony:
Tony Gwynn ( outfielder ) “I always enjoyed watching Tony because I was a left-handed hitter. He had one of the most beautiful swings I have ever seen. He was a hitting machine!”

      Did You Know:

August 6 was a big date for Gwynn; he picked up his 2,000th hit on August 6, 1993 against the Montreal Expos. He then picked up his 3,000th hit on August 6, 1999 against the Colorado Rockies. August 6 is also his mother’s birthday.

CC Celebrates Black History Month – The Pioneers of the Game of Baseball

Everyday for the month of February, CC will feature one of his baseball heroes as part of Black History month. Each one of the men had a profound effect on the game of baseball and was an inspiration to CC as he worked to become a Major League Baseball player.

"I grew up in the Boys & Girls Club, grew up in the inner city, saw everything that it can do for you," Sabathia said. "I was fortunate to be able to get out, and now I'm trying to give back."
